The panic around artificial intelligence is understandable. Tools such as ChatGPT or Google's AI generate text on demand, and media headlines often paint a future in which artificial intelligence takes over the creative professions. If you are a copywriter, it is only natural to ask yourself: "Will my job still exist in a few years?"
The answer is yes, it will. But it will be different. Artificial intelligence is not a competitor that will take your job. It is a tool that will separate average copywriters from the truly good ones. Human creativity, strategy and empathy remain irreplaceable.
1. AI is a master of compilation, not creation
The basic misunderstanding about AI is that AI "creates". In reality, artificial intelligence creates nothing new. It is powerful software for recognising patterns and compiling information that already exists. When you give AI a request, it searches an enormous amount of data and assembles the statistically most probable answer from it. Nothing more.
The result may be grammatically correct and meaningful at first glance, but it is only a digital echo, not an original idea.
- A human copywriter listens to the client, understands their unique problem and comes up with an original campaign concept that resonates with the target audience.
- An AI copywriter recycles a handful of the most common marketing phrases from the given industry and assembles a generic text from them.
Your job as a copywriter is not to repeat what has already been said. Your job is to find a voice for the client that is unique and unmistakable. And that is something AI cannot do by its very nature.
2. AI does not feel and does not understand context
Copywriting is not just about putting words together. It is about the ability to empathise with the customer and understand their worries, desires and motivations. It is about building trust and an emotional bond between a brand and a person.
AI has no emotions. It cannot connect with people on a deeper level, because it does not understand the customer's worries or joy.
An experienced copywriter can write so that the text sounds like a natural part of a brand's communication, whether that brand is playful, serious, luxurious or friendly. AI lacks the feel for the nuances that make a brand authentic.
3. Strategy and critical thinking are beyond AI's reach
Successful copywriting is not just a nice piece of text, it is part of a well-thought-out strategy. A good copywriter thinks conceptually:
- How does this text fit into the overall marketing strategy?
- What action should it prompt in the user?
- What impact will it have on how the brand is perceived?
- Is it in line with the company's values?
AI will not answer these questions. It can generate a blog post on a given topic, but it cannot design a content strategy for the long term. AI can write the copy for an advert, but it will not come up with the creative concept for an entire campaign.
AI will not replace copywriters
The truth is that AI will take over part of the work. Above all the routine part. Writing basic product descriptions, generating simple social media posts or rewriting information that already exists. AI will replace those who have only learnt to produce text mechanically, without added value.
Artificial intelligence is not going away. But it will not destroy the copywriting profession either. It will simply raise the bar. The future does not belong to AI, but to creative professionals who learn to master artificial intelligence.
At a time when enormous amounts of generic content are being produced, high-quality, considered and targeted text is worth more than ever before.
Today, a professional copywriter is not just someone who writes texts. They are a partner who helps brands grow, communicate precisely and provoke a response. And that is exactly the kind of partner clients will be looking for once they realise that quality and understanding cannot be automated.
