Designed for beginners
Getting started in the world of blogging may seem complicated. We understand. We have experience building websites and blogs and have helped many users like you. We know the mistakes people make at the start, and we have put this guide together so that you avoid them and start the right way, even if you are only just beginning. We will take you through every step, clearly.
So how do you do it? We will create your blog together in a few simple steps:
- Choose a name for your blog: pick a name that is apt and memorable.
- Get your blog online: register a domain and get reliable hosting.
- Write and publish your first post: share your thoughts with the world.
Why should you start blogging in the first place?
People do not come to blogs for academic essays but for personal perspectives, authentic stories and practical advice. Bloggers often write informally and in a friendly way, and share their passions. You do not have to be an expert, enthusiasm for the topic is enough!
The main reasons to start a blog:
- Share your story: a blog is a great platform where you can express your opinions and be heard. It can also work as your online diary.
- Earn from the comfort of home: blogging can be an interesting source of income, even if you devote only a few hours a week to it.
- Gain recognition: a successful blog can open the door to new opportunities.
What exactly is a blog?
Very simply: a blog is a type of website where written content, your articles or blog posts, plays the main role. Blogs typically also have a space for comments, where you can communicate directly with your readers. And it is precisely this interaction and community building that is one of the greatest benefits of blogging.
The good news? The internet keeps growing, and with it the number of people you can reach with your blog. So let us get to work.
Step 1: Choose a name for your blog
The first step is to come up with a name for your blog, your future domain (for example MySuperBlog.com). It is the address where people will find you on the internet.
If you are stuck, here are a few tips for finding the right name:
- Your topic: try to include a keyword related to the content of your blog in the name.
- Your name: if you are planning a personal blog, using your own name is a great choice.
- Creativity: come up with an original, catchy name that people will remember.
How long should a domain name be?
As a general rule: the shorter the better, but the name should still be apt and easy to remember. There is no strict rule, but here are the main recommendations and the reasons behind them:
- Easy to remember: People remember short names better. If you tell someone the name of your blog, they should be able to recall it easily later.
- Easy to type and less risk of typos: People type a shorter domain into the browser faster and there is less chance of a mistake.
- Easy to share: A shorter name is easier to share by word of mouth, on social media or on business cards.
- Looks more professional: Very long and complicated names can look amateurish.
- Availability: Unfortunately, the shortest and most apt names (a single word) are often already taken. That is why it is sometimes necessary to choose a combination of two (at most three) shorter words.
Recommended length:
- Ideally try to stay between 6 and 15 characters (for the part of the name before the .cz, .com or other extension).
- If you have to go over 15 characters, make sure the name is still logical and easy to read.
- Avoid abbreviations that are too generic or, conversely, too complex or unintelligible.
Example:
Good: MujBlog.cz, PejskuvSvet.cz, ReceptyBabicky.cz
Less ideal (too long/complicated): NejlepsiReceptyOdMojíBabickyZMoravy.cz
- Technically, the domain name itself (without the extension) can be up to 63 characters long.
- It may contain letters (a-z, no accented characters), digits (0-9) and the hyphen (-). The hyphen must not be at the beginning or end of the name, and there must not be two in a row (--).
The aim is to strike a balance between brevity, aptness and availability. Focus on a name your future readers can easily remember and type.
Step 2: Get your blog on the internet
Got a domain? Excellent! Now we need to "get your blog on the internet" so that others can see it too. Do not worry, it is not complicated. You only need three things:
- Domain registration: the official registration of the name you have chosen (for example MySuperBlog.com) is handled by your web host.
- Web hosting: renting space on a server where your blog's files (texts, images) will be stored and from where it will be served to visitors.
- Blogging software (content management system): the tool you will use to manage the blog, write articles and adjust the design. In our case we will use Joomla.
Why do we use Joomla in this guide instead of the better-known WordPress?
Joomla is a great, powerful platform with several advantages:
- It is very flexible and suits not only blogs but also larger, more professional websites.
- It offers a huge number of templates (designs) and extensions (features), both free and paid.
- It allows more advanced customisation and content management directly in the administration.
- It has excellent Czech language support and an active community of users and developers.

Installing Joomla for beginners
Many modern web hosting services today offer pre-installed systems such as Joomla or WordPress, which makes the start of a web project much easier for users. Thanks to these pre-installed applications, you can launch a website quickly without complicated installation or configuration.
Do not be afraid of the installation. We will show you everything, or you can simply choose web hosting with Joomla support. When you order Joomla hosting, you will be able to install Joomla using a simple wizard. Usually a few clicks are enough.
- Log in to your hosting account.
- Select Joomla from the list of available systems and click Install.
- After installation you will have access to your website administration at www.yourdomain.com/administrator.
Installing Joomla for advanced users
Download the current version of Joomla! from the link on the page www.joomla.org/5
Use an FTP client (for example FileZilla). Enter the FTP server login details you received from your hosting provider. In the FTP client, connect to the server and open the folder where you want to upload the files (usually the website's root folder or the public_html folder). On your computer, select the Joomla installation package and drag the file onto the server into the required folder.
It is faster to move the downloaded Joomla_.zip installation file to your server and unpack it there than to unpack it on your computer and then move the files. If you do not know how to unpack a .zip file on the server, do not worry about it; unpack the installation package on your computer and copy the files to the server's root folder directly from your computer.
Launch the Joomla web installer by opening your browser and entering your website's domain name, for example www.mysuperblog.com. Joomla will try to detect your browser language automatically and switch the installer to it (Czech, in our case).
Fill in the required details:
- Enter the name of your website, for example "MySuperBlog.com".
- Enter the name of the Super User. Joomla will greet you by this name when you log in to the website.
- Enter the Super User's username for logging in. Avoid using the name admin and the like.
- Enter the password for logging in to the website. Remember that the Super User has full control over the whole website, so choose a stronger password. You can change both the name and the password at any time later.
- Enter the database details; as a rule your web host will send you this information. Every Joomla! installation requires a database. The database will store the data for articles, menus, categories, users and so on.
After clicking the "Install Joomla" button you should see the rotating Joomla logo, and once the installation is complete you should see a message that Joomla has been installed successfully on the server.
Congratulations! Joomla is now installed. Do not install any additional extensions or templates for now.
Step 3: Create content
After installing and logging in to the website, you can start creating categories, articles and menu items in Joomla. Watch the content structure come to life. If you have worked with WordPress or static HTML pages, you will find that Joomla works a little differently.
Joomla has a built-in guided tour for writing articles and creating menus and categories. You will see how easy it is.
Categories in Joomla: smartly organised content
Think of a category as a folder on your computer where you store various files, whether documents, photos or spreadsheets. Just as folders help you find the right file quickly, categories in Joomla serve to organise articles clearly.
In a basic Joomla installation (without sample data), a single default category called "Uncategorised" is created. If you decide to install the sample data as well, Joomla automatically adds several sample categories, for example "Blog" for blog-type posts.
Working with categories in Joomla
Managing categories in the administration is very similar to managing the articles themselves. Categories can also be arranged hierarchically, that is, you can create subcategories. You will appreciate this especially as your website gradually grows. For example, if you run a blog, you can create categories by topic: Travel, Recipes, Technology and so on, and then place them under the main Blog category.
This organisation has not only organisational advantages but also makes it easy to display articles on the website. For example, you can create a menu item of the "Category Blog" type, which displays all articles from a given category, or use one of the Joomla modules designed to list articles or the categories themselves.
Adding an article
After logging in to the website, click the "+ New" button. An editor opens where you can start creating your content.
First of all, write the article title, which should be short and to the point, ideally no more than 6 words. The title is key because it gives readers their first glimpse of the topic. Next, place the article in the right category.
Avoid unnecessarily technical terms and focus on clear, understandable language. The meta description is just as important for SEO; use a brief introductory sentence or your lead paragraph here.
Never paste formatted text into an article, for example text from Word. Your website will then look wrong and you will think you have broken it. Always paste content as plain text and format it within Joomla using the built-in text editor.
Introduction (lead) The first part of the article, the introduction or lead, should contain the key information from the article. This text is generated from the first paragraph. Remember that the introduction must capture the reader's attention and arouse their interest. The following paragraphs let you develop the topic in more detail. Do not forget to add an intro image that complements the text. The editor gives you a tool for cropping the image to the required dimensions.
Article content For formatting text you have the editor toolbar, which lets you work with text easily, much like in a word processor (such as Word). An article structured with headings is clearer and easier to read. At the end, do not forget to add supplementary information or links. When adding a link to an external website, choose the "open in new window" option so that the reader stays on your site.
Images When choosing images, respect copyright. If you do not have your own images, we recommend using sites such as Pixabay, Unsplash and the like. Always enter the source of the image (for example "Pixabay") in the "Image source" field unless the photos are your own. You can add further images to the article content using the image icon in the editor. The recommended image size is 1200 x 800 pixels.
Tips for effective writing:
- Be brief and clear. Get to the point; readers appreciate being able to find their way around the text quickly.
- Use headings. A structured article is easier to read.
- Optimise for SEO. Do not forget the meta description and tags, which help the article achieve better visibility in search engines.
- Use quality images and videos. Multimedia content makes an article more attractive and increases reader engagement.
What next?
Congratulations! If you have followed this guide, you now have your own blog running on Joomla. From here on it is all about your creativity and regular publishing.
