What are cookies? In the HTTP protocol, a cookie is a small amount of data that a web server sends to a browser, which stores it on the user's computer. On every subsequent visit to the same server, the browser sends this data back to the server. Cookies are commonly used to distinguish individual users and to store user preferences, which then make the website easier to use. Cookies are stored on the user's side as short text files.
If the browser has at least one cookie for a given server (and a given directory on it), it sends a Cookie header with every request to that server, containing the same data the server originally sent. Cookies pose no danger to your computer. Even so, cookies matter for privacy. The website you visit can store in cookies any information it learns about the visitor and can thus gradually build up a picture of a particular visitor's interests. However, cookies can in no way be used to establish visitors' identities.
