Mozilla's Firefox has long been known for its focus on freedom, privacy and openness. In 2022, however, Mozilla took another major step towards community-driven development. It introduced the Mozilla Connect platform. The aim was to create a place where Firefox fans and users can get directly involved in the decisions that shape the browser's development.
Unlike ordinary forums or anonymous surveys, Mozilla Connect is an interactive platform where you can propose new features, vote on existing ideas and discuss various aspects of using Firefox. Everything is directly connected to Mozilla's product teams, so the feedback genuinely lands on fertile ground.
In the first two years after launch, more than 80,000 active members from around the world joined Mozilla Connect. Together they contributed hundreds of proposals, of which over 125 have already made their way into Firefox, with more in development.
The most popular topics include vertical tabs, tab grouping, customisable profiles for different purposes (for example work versus personal use) and improved support for extensions on mobile devices.
Community influence in practice
One concrete example is the redesign of the toolbar in Firefox for iOS. The original version was criticised by some users for its limited functionality. Based on comments and requests from Mozilla Connect, the developers responded quickly and added, for example, a button for sharing content and an easier way to open new tabs.
Another strong signal came with the removal of night mode. After this change, almost 200 requests to bring it back appeared on Mozilla Connect, often from users with visual impairments. This feedback prompted the developers to consider how carefully to treat features that, for many users, are not just a convenience but a necessity.
Why Mozilla Connect matters
Mozilla Connect is not just another community website. It is proof that even in a software world dominated by technology giants, an open and human approach to development can exist. Users turn from passive recipients into active creators of the browser's future.
With this step, Mozilla once again confirms its values of transparency, collaboration and a focus on user needs. At a time when trust in technology matters more than ever, Mozilla Connect represents a modern way of building software that genuinely serves people.
